In an effort to introduce more students to the world of science, The Putnam Children's Discovery Center is hosting  several FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHTS.  Please check back frequently to see where and when the next FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT will be held. This is a must do for preschool and elementary aged students!!  Many hands on activities are available geared for ages 3-10.  Stop by anytime during this hour and  a half program, stay as long as you like... and it's  free admission!!

Each night will feature many hands-on experiments designed to demonstrate scientific principles in a simple, fun, entertaining way and approachable experts to answer a child's most curious question.   The Discovery Center hopes that one of it's hands-on experiments or hand out information will encourage a child to create a science project for their “own” school science fair.   First place winners from local school Fairs become eligible to participate in the TRI COUNTY SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FAIR also produced by the Putnam Children’s Discovery Center.  This regional fair is for Westchester, Putnam and Rockland County students grades K-12.  This year’s Fair will be held at JFK High School 54 Route 138 Somers, NY in April. (See Tri County Science & Technology Fair for exact date and details)

You can play an important role in this evening by becoming a Volunteer.  People are needed  to demonstrate scientific principles and/or create exhibits.  As well as people to help with general duties for the evening such as set up/clean up etc.  Please fill out our volunteer form in the volunteer area on this site.

Corporate and individual sponsorship for this program is welcome, persons interested should contact Janice Newman 845-621-1260 ext 201 ( best time to call after 9PM at night) or leave a message and you will receive a day time call back.

YOUR STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO CREATE AN EXHIBIT THAT DEMONSTRATES A SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLE that children ages 3-10 can understand.  YOUR SCHOOL CAN HAVE AVAILABLE AT IT’S TABLE LITERATURE ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL, SPECIAL PROGRAMS ETC.

BENEFITS FOR YOUR STUDENTS:

  • Cooperative Research & Working on a Team

  • Sharing / Volunteering Time

  • Public Presentation Skills

  • Learning a Scientific Principle

Exhibitors must be available between 6:30-8:30 on the night of the event to explain the exhibit. However all students creating the project do not have to all be present at all times: i.e. if 10 students create the project you can have 2-3 students in half hour shifts

Please note this activity can be generated by the school or suggested to a few students who may have an interest in doing this.  We suggest that projects are done in groups whether by class or a few friends.

Dinner & Set Up is 5:00-6:30

FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Volunteers are needed to help with the Family Science Night Program. Please note that actual dates for each school year are set in September please refer to the dates at that time and choose which night is best for you. Click on link above for the registration form.

SCIENCE PROFESSIONALS WANTED

It is our hope that you can participate by either setting up a table and demonstrating a scientific principle; or sitting on a panel of experts where children ask any question that comes to mind.  This program is made possible through people like you who volunteer their valuable time to spark and inspire the young scientist inside each of us. Click on link above for the registration form.

FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT FINANCIAL SUPPORT

It costs approximately $600 to produce a Family Science Night and additional funds can help to invite more schools to participate and rent additional exhibits from other sources.  Please consider making a financial contribution.  Donations of $250 or more will be recognized in our press and on our website for all 4 nights.  We need to keep these nights FREE so that we can be available for every child who has an interest in science. Click on link above for the registration form.
