Students grades 6-8 that place in the top percentile of our Fair can go onto further competition at the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge. Have your science teacher contact us to learn how Jnewman@DiscoveryCtr.org
Fair Timeline
- Registration now through March 21. Schools should fill out an intent form to participate.
- Schools or interested parents should email JNewman@ Discoveryctr.org for more information
- March 22 all entries must be submitted
- March 23 participants will receive “next steps” with questions and links to upload videos.
- March 27 midnight all submissions must be completed
- On or after March 29 judging begins. Students need not be available.
- April 27th awards will be posted
- May 3 deadline to accept our invitations to further competitions.

New awards this year
The Janice Miller Newman Education Award for Excellence in Developing Future Scientists for Top Elementary School with the highest overall score among all other elementary schools that have a minimum of three exhibits entered in the competition.
The very first Janice Miller Newman Award goes to F.E. BELLOWS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The Frank Iacopelli Award for Academic Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics goes to the highest overall score among all other high schools that have a minimum of three exhibits entered in the competition.
The very first Frank Iacopelli Award for Academic Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics goes to BYRAM HILLS HIGH SCHOOL.
Are winners eligible for further competition?
- The top 10% in grades 6,7 and 8 are eligible for Broadcom Masters, a national competition with several achievement awards.
- Inventors in grades 6, 7 and 8 are eligible for The Lemelson Early Inventor nationwide competition
- The Lemelson Early Inventor Prize is to be awarded to one nationwide middle school project (6th, 7th or 8th grade) that meets the invention award criteria:
• Demonstrates problem-solving by identifying a critical problem.
• Applies empathy and STEM knowledge to find a practical solution.
• Displays entrepreneurial thinking by developing a tangible invention
Please encourage students to consider this as an option. Since this is an invention, you can suggest this as a multiyear endeavor.
- The Lemelson Early Inventor Prize is to be awarded to one nationwide middle school project (6th, 7th or 8th grade) that meets the invention award criteria:
- The top achievers (3-5 projects) on the High School level will go on to New York State Science Congress.
